In Draper, the Park Strip Tree Is Your Job

Tree Service in Draper often starts at the curb. Draper's code makes property owners responsible for watering and maintaining the required street trees in the park strip next to their property. That is different from Salt Lake City, where park strip trees are handled by the city. So in Draper, pruning the street tree out front is usually something you can hire us to do.

What Draper's tree guide requires

The city's tree guide pulls its rules from the Draper City Code. A few that matter when you replace or plant a street tree:

  • No street trees in park strips narrower than five feet
  • At least one street tree for every 40 feet of street frontage
  • New trees at least 2 inches in caliper, watered by bubblers or drip
  • Species chosen from the city's street tree list, and under power lines only species that stay 25 feet or shorter
  • Siberian elm and weeping Camperdown elm are excluded; honeylocust must be seedless and ginkgo male

If you receive a city notice about tree removal, the guide links a Tree Retention Waiver Form. Questions go to the Planning office at (801) 576-6399.

Foothills and fire

Draper runs from the valley floor up toward the Wasatch on the east and the Traverse Mountains to the south. The tree guide says homes above 5,000 feet need to follow firewise landscaping principles. In practice that means space between tree crowns, no branches over the roof, limbs raised well off the ground, and no dead material piled near the house. We do that kind of fuel-reduction pruning and clearing, and we haul the material away instead of leaving it on site.

Wind at the point

Point of the Mountain is known as one of the country's best spots for hang gliding and paragliding because of steady wind. Trees on exposed lots near the point and along the ridges take that wind every day, and in summer the valley also gets monsoon thunderstorms with gusty outflow. A well-thinned crown lets wind pass through. A dense, top-heavy one acts like a sail.

Soil to check before replanting

The city's guide recommends testing soil for verticillium wilt before planting, a fungus that can kill trees and is especially hard on maples. If we remove a maple that died of wilt, we will mention it so the replacement is a species that resists it.

Who lives here

Draper had 51,017 residents in 2020, and Census figures put its median home value around $785,000, among the highest in the valley. Lots range from compact newer subdivisions to large foothill parcels. Garbage and recycling service is changing too: the city says Ace Disposal takes over citywide service effective August 17, 2026, so check its pages for green-waste details.

Draper Questions

Who is responsible for the tree in my Draper park strip?

Under Draper's code, the property owner is responsible for watering and maintaining required street trees in the park strip next to the property. You can hire us to prune it, and replacements need to come from the city's street tree list.

Can I plant a Siberian elm out front to replace the one that died?

Not as a street tree. Draper's street tree list excludes Siberian elm and weeping Camperdown elm. Ask the Planning office for the current list, and pick a species sized for the park strip width and any overhead lines.

My home is above 5,000 feet. What does firewise pruning look like?

Raising lower limbs, clearing branches away from the roof and chimney, thinning so crowns don't touch, and removing dead wood and brush near the house. We clear the material off site so it doesn't become fuel.
