From Army Air Base to Backyard Shade

Kearns began on May 1, 1942, as Kearns Army Air Base, a training field that became Camp Kearns in 1944 and closed in 1946. Houses spread quickly over the former farmland after the war, and Tree Service in Kearns today deals with what those early residents planted. A shade tree put in during the late 1940s or 1950s is now around seventy years old, and many have reached the point where they need serious work or careful removal.

Layers of neighborhoods

After the first postwar wave, suburban building moved west past the railroad tracks to 5600 West during the 1970s and 1980s. The last major housing area went in between 5600 West and 6200 South, and more homes were built around Oquirrh Park in 2019 and 2020. So a single drive across Kearns takes you from very old trees on the east side, through middle-aged ones, to brand-new plantings near the Olympic Oval.

A compact city

Kearns covers only about 4.63 square miles and had 36,723 residents in 2020. Lots are close together, which makes most removals a matter of climbing, cutting in sections and lowering wood on ropes rather than dropping whole trees. We look at fences, sheds, carports and overhead service lines before giving a price, and we tell you where the truck and chipper will sit.

Common requests

  • Removing big, declining trees from the first postwar decades
  • Thinning heavy limbs off roofs and carports
  • Grinding old stumps that were cut flush and left
  • Clearing volunteer elm and tree-of-heaven from fence lines
  • Raising low limbs over sidewalks and driveways

Green waste and leaves

Kearns is served by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District. Its green-waste can is an optional subscription that runs from the second Monday in March to the second Friday in December, and material has to fit with the lid closed. The district also lists a Kearns site in its fall leaf drop-off program. For anything larger than routine clippings, our estimates include chipping and hauling.

A newly minted city

Kearns gained township status in 2002, became a metro township in 2017 and became a city on May 1, 2024. If you are not sure who to call about a tree in the right-of-way or a park strip, the city offices are the place to start. The Utah Olympic Oval, built for the 2002 Winter Games at Oquirrh Park, is still the most recognizable landmark in town.

Tree Removal in Salt Lake City, UT

Kearns Questions

My tree is as old as the house. How do I know if it should come down?

Age alone isn't the deciding factor. We look for decay at the base, cracks in major unions, dead sections of crown and lean. Some old trees just need deadwood removed and some weight taken off; others are past saving. We'll tell you which.

Can the district's green-waste can handle a tree removal?

No. The can only takes what fits with the lid closed, and anything outside it won't be picked up. Removal and large pruning jobs need chipping and hauling, which we include in the estimate.

There is no gate wide enough for equipment. Can you still do the job?

Yes. Most Kearns backyards are handled by climbing and hand-carrying or rope-lowering the wood to the front. It adds labor, and the estimate will show it.

Do you prune trees over the sidewalk and street?

Yes, for trees on your property. Raising limbs over walks and drives keeps them clear for people and vehicles. If the tree itself stands in the park strip or right-of-way, check with the city first, since rules for public trees differ from private ones.

How long does a typical removal take on a Kearns lot?

Many single-tree removals on compact lots take part of a day, including cleanup. Large trees over houses, or jobs where everything is carried out by hand, can take longer. The estimate gives you a realistic idea before you book.
