A Young City Full of Grown-Up Trees

Millcreek only became a city on December 28, 2016, but Tree Service in Millcreek rarely involves young trees. The area stayed mostly rural until after World War II, and the suburbs that filled in afterward are now old enough that the shade trees planted with them have grown past the rooflines. Our work here is mostly about bringing those trees back into proportion, removing the ones that have failed, and grinding the stumps left behind.

Four communities, four kinds of lots

The city is organized into four community councils that roughly follow the old census areas: Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek and Mount Olympus. The terrain changes as you move east. Lower streets near Highland Drive tend to have flatter, smaller lots with a big tree or two out back. Toward Mount Olympus the ground rises toward the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon, lots get steeper and the trees get closer to the house. We price each property after seeing it, because a removal on a sloped back lot above a retaining wall is a different job from the same tree on level lawn.

How green waste works here

Millcreek is served by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District. Its green-waste can is a subscription, $12 a month plus a $70 start-up fee, or $144 a year, and it runs from the second Monday in March to the second Friday in December. Material has to fit with the lid closed, and nothing left beside the can gets picked up. The district sends it to the Salt Lake Valley Composting Facility to be turned into compost and mulch. That can is fine for clippings from a small pruning job. For anything bigger, our estimates include chipping and hauling the wood away.

What we usually see

  • Silver maples and other fast-growing shade trees with heavy limbs over roofs
  • Spruce and pine planted close to foundations decades ago
  • Fruit trees in older backyards that have not been pruned in years
  • Trees that were topped once and grew back with weak, crowded sprouts
  • Stumps from removals that were never ground

Owners and renters

Census figures put Millcreek's owner-occupied rate at about 61 percent, which means plenty of rentals mixed in with long-held homes. If you manage a rental, we can walk the property with you or with a tenant present, put the scope and price in writing, and send photos when the work is done.

A record tree in town

The Utah Big Tree Directory lists its largest recorded Japanese maple in Millcreek. It is a reminder that small ornamental trees can live a long time here when they are pruned lightly and given room. If you have a prized ornamental, we will thin it by hand and keep cuts small rather than shearing it.

Millcreek Questions

Where can I take bagged leaves in Millcreek?

The Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District runs fall leaf drop-off sites, and both Millcreek and Canyon Rim are on its list. Leaves must be bagged and nothing else is accepted at the sites. Starting in 2026 the district no longer hands out free bags, so plan on buying standard lawn bags.

My yard is on a slope near Mount Olympus. Does that change the price?

It can. A slope affects where we can set up, how wood is moved and whether a tree can be felled or has to come down in pieces. We look at all of that on site and put it in the written estimate.

Can you prune a tree that someone topped years ago?

Yes. Topped trees grow back with clusters of fast, weakly attached sprouts. We usually thin those over one or two visits, keeping the best-placed leaders, so the tree builds a sounder structure instead of being cut back hard again.
