Two Very Different Kinds of Yards

South Jordan's population went from about 12,000 in 1990 to 77,487 in 2020, and Tree Service in South Jordan reflects that speed. Older parts of the city near the Jordan River have farm-era trees and big lots. Newer areas to the west, led by Daybreak, are full of trees that are ten to twenty years old and just getting to the size where pruning decisions start to matter.

Daybreak and HOA landscapes

Kennecott Land began Daybreak in 2004 on about 4,200 acres planned for more than 20,000 homes, and the remaining land went to the Larry H. Miller Group in 2022. The community has 37 parks, 22 miles of trails and Oquirrh Lake, a 67-acre lake inside 137 acres of park and wetlands, all privately owned by the HOA. If you live in Daybreak or another HOA, two things are worth knowing before tree work:

  • Park strip and common-area trees may be maintained by the association, not by you
  • Removing or replacing a front-yard tree may need HOA approval, and some associations specify replacement species

Check your CC&Rs or ask the management company. We are glad to put the scope in writing for you to submit.

Pruning young trees the right way

Most Daybreak trees are at the age where a few correct cuts set the structure for the next fifty years. Structural pruning at this stage means choosing a single dominant leader, removing competing stems, spacing the main limbs along the trunk, and taking out branches that cross or rub. It is light work done every few years, and it prevents the split forks and heavy, overextended limbs we cut off older trees all the time.

The older side of the city

South Jordan was founded in 1859 and incorporated on November 8, 1935, partly to qualify for a federal grant for a water tank. Along the Jordan River Parkway, which runs about 3.5 miles through the city, and on older properties east of Bangerter, lots are larger and trees are older: cottonwoods, willows, big elms and old fruit trees left from the farming days. The Utah Big Tree Directory lists South Jordan as the home of its largest recorded peachleaf willow and European hornbeam, along with several others.

Elevation and exposure

The city climbs from about 4,300 feet near the river to about 5,200 feet in the Oquirrh foothills. Higher, more open lots on the west side catch more wind, and trees in new subdivisions have little shelter from each other yet. We often see young trees leaning or with one-sided crowns. Corrective pruning while they are small fixes that cheaply.

Who lives here

Census figures put South Jordan's owner-occupied rate at about 81 percent and its median home value near $650,500. Most of our calls come from owners who want their trees to look right and stay healthy, not just get cut back.

South Jordan Questions

Do I need HOA approval to remove a tree in Daybreak?

Often you do, especially for front-yard and park strip trees. Check your CC&Rs or ask the management company first. We can give you a written description of the work and the reason for it to include with your request.

My Daybreak trees are only ten years old. Do they need pruning?

This is the best time for it. Light structural pruning now, choosing a leader and spacing the main limbs, prevents the weak forks that split later. It takes little time and costs far less than fixing a mature tree.

Can you remove old cottonwoods on a large lot near the river?

Yes. Big cottonwoods are heavy and often have hidden decay, so we look closely at how they can be taken down safely. On open lots some can be felled; near buildings they come down in sections.

Is there a best season for pruning young trees?

Late winter, before buds open, is ideal for most deciduous trees. You can see the branch structure clearly and the tree seals cuts quickly once spring growth starts.
