When a Storm Brings a Tree Down
Emergency storm tree service in Salt Lake City is mostly about two kinds of weather: wind and wet snow. The September 2020 windstorm, with gusts over 100 mph and a 112 mph gust at the University of Utah, toppled thousands of trees across northern Utah and left nearly 200,000 homes and businesses without power. Most years bring nothing that severe, but an early-season snow on trees still in leaf, a spring storm on a blooming fruit tree or a summer thunderstorm downburst can split limbs and uproot trees in a matter of minutes.
First, stay away from wires
If a tree or limb is touching a power line, or a line is down, stay well back and call Rocky Mountain Power. The utility warns that contacting a power line can be fatal. No tree work should happen near those lines until the utility has made them safe. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or a line is sparking.
What we do first
Storm calls are handled by danger, not by the order they come in. A tree through a roof, a trunk leaning against the house, a limb blocking the only door or driveway, and hanging broken branches over a walkway come first. Once the immediate hazard is off the house, we can come back to cut up the rest, grind the stump and repair the remaining crown with proper pruning cuts.
Trees on houses
A tree resting on a roof often holds part of its weight on the structure; cutting it wrong can make the damage worse. These trees are taken off piece by piece, with heavy sections rigged and lowered. In tight spots, a crane is sometimes the safest way to lift a trunk off a house, and the quote will say if that's what the job needs. Take photos of the damage before anything is moved if you plan to file an insurance claim.
Park strip and street trees
If a city tree or a big limb from one is blocking the street, sidewalk or your driveway, Salt Lake City Urban Forestry asks you to call (801) 972-7818, and it lists storm cleanup among its park strip services. Calls about city trees go to the city, not to a private company.
Cracked but still standing
After a storm, look for fresh cracks in the trunk, split forks, broken branches hung up in the canopy and soil lifted around the roots. A tree that came through with only a few broken limbs can often be kept with good pruning. One that's cracked through the main fork or lifted at the roots usually can't.
Typical Jobs
Storm work runs from one hanging limb to a whole tree on a house.
Trees on structures
Trees and big limbs taken off roofs, garages, sheds and fences in sections.
Fallen and uprooted trees
Trees already on the ground cut up, chipped and hauled or left as firewood.
Hanging limbs
Broken branches caught in the canopy brought down before they drop on their own.
Storm pruning
Torn stubs cut back cleanly so the tree can seal the wounds.
Snow-load damage
Split evergreens and broken leaders cleaned up after heavy wet snow.

Typical Storm and Emergency Tree Costs
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Fallen tree, cut and haul only (Angi) | $300 to $500 |
| Emergency removal after storms (Angi) | up to $5,000 |
| Emergency work vs standard rate (HomeGuide) | about 2 to 3 times |
| Crane, per day (Angi) | $250 to $600 |
| Difficult crane removal, total (Angi) | $6,000 to $7,000 |
| Hard-to-reach tree (Angi) | adds 25% to 50% |
Ranges from Angi (updated October 2026) and HomeGuide (2026), national figures. Storm jobs vary more than any other tree work: a tree on a roof is priced very differently from one lying in the lawn. Your written estimate is the price.
How Storm Calls Are Handled
1. Call and describe it
Tell us what fell, where, and whether wires or the house are involved. Photos help us prepare.
2. Utility first if needed
If lines are involved, Rocky Mountain Power makes them safe before we start.
3. Rig and protect
The tree or limb is taken off the house, door or driveway first.
4. Written quote for the rest
Cleanup, stump grinding and repair pruning are quoted once the danger is gone.
5. Cleanup
Wood and brush handled as agreed, and the yard raked out.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions
Can I call at night after a storm?
You can call (385) 217-6481 any time to leave the details. We return calls in order of danger, starting with trees on houses and blocked exits.
A tree fell on my house. Does insurance cover removal?
Many homeowner policies pay to remove a tree that damaged a covered structure, though coverage varies. Photograph the tree and damage before anything is moved, call your insurer, and keep the written quote and invoice.
The city tree in my park strip lost a big limb. Who handles it?
Salt Lake City Urban Forestry. Call (801) 972-7818; the city lists storm pickup and hazard response among its park strip services, and emergencies like a limb blocking the street, sidewalk or a driveway go to that office.
How much does emergency tree removal cost?
Angi's 2026 figures put cut-and-haul of an already fallen tree at about $300 to $500, while emergency removals after storms can reach $5,000 when a tree is on a structure or a crane is needed. We give a written price once we've seen it.
Can a tree with storm damage be saved?
Often, if the trunk and main forks are sound and the roots weren't lifted. Broken branches are cut back to clean wounds and the crown is balanced. A trunk crack through the main fork usually means removal.
