Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield and Redwood

West Valley City was formed in 1980 when four communities, Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield and Redwood, merged into what is now Utah's second-largest city, with 140,230 people in 2020. Tree Service in West Valley City covers a lot of ground, about 36 square miles between the Jordan River on the east and the Oquirrh Mountains on the west, and a lot of history: Welsh settlers arrived in Granger in 1849, and Hunter was settled in 1876.

The Siberian elm question

The Utah Big Tree Directory lists West Valley as the location of its largest recorded Siberian elm. That says a lot about how well the species does here. Siberian elm tolerates heat, drought, alkaline soil and neglect. It also:

  • Grows fast and produces brittle wood that breaks in wind and wet snow
  • Drops huge loads of papery seed every spring that clog gutters and sprout in beds
  • Hosts elm seed bugs and elm leaf beetles, which invade houses in summer and fall
  • Suckers and reseeds into fence lines, where it grows into the wires and the neighbor's yard

We prune Siberian elms that are worth keeping and remove the ones that are not. Many of the ones we take down were never planted on purpose: they came up from seed against a fence and were left to grow.

Big households, busy yards

Census figures show an average of about 3.5 people per household in West Valley City, one of the highest in the valley, and an owner-occupied rate of about 72 percent. Yards here get used: kids, dogs, gardens, trailers parked on the side. When we plan a removal, we ask where play equipment, gardens and parked vehicles are so the work goes around them.

East side, west side

The older Granger and Chesterfield areas toward the Jordan River tend to have the biggest, oldest trees. Hunter, toward the Oquirrhs, filled in later and has younger landscapes, more open ground and more wind exposure. The work shifts accordingly: dismantling big old trees on the east side, structural pruning and windbreak cleanup on the west.

The wood has to go somewhere

Elm wood is stringy and hard to split, and most people do not want it as firewood. Our estimates spell out whether wood is chipped and hauled, left in rounds, or a mix, so there is no surprise pile on the park strip.

Tree Removal in Salt Lake City, UT

West Valley City Questions

Should I remove the Siberian elm growing in my fence line?

If it came up from seed and is growing into the fence, removal is usually the better choice before the trunk swallows the wire. If it is a large, established shade tree that is structurally sound, pruning can keep it. We'll give you an honest take on which you have.

What are the bugs coming into my house from the elm?

Most often they are elm seed bugs or boxelder bugs, which gather on warm walls in summer and fall. Pruning the tree won't eliminate them, but keeping branches off the house cuts down on how many get in.

Do you work in Hunter and Granger both?

Yes, across all of West Valley City. Pricing depends on the tree and the property, not the neighborhood, and every estimate is in writing.

When is the best time to prune an elm?

Late fall through late winter, while the tree is dormant, is usually best. Cuts close faster in spring, insects are less active, and with leaves off it is easier to see the structure. Storm-damaged limbs, of course, should come down whenever they break.

Will grinding a Siberian elm stump stop it from sprouting?

Grinding well below grade removes most of the stump and stops the bulk of regrowth. A few root sprouts can still appear for a season. Cutting them as they show up usually finishes the job.
