Tree Work Where the Forest Comes to the Door

Emigration Canyon is about 18 square miles of canyon with just 1,466 residents at the 2020 census, and Tree Service in Emigration Canyon is unlike anything on the valley floor. Much of the canyon lies within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Homes sit on slopes along a road that climbs about 1,300 feet over roughly 7.7 miles from the mouth near the University of Utah. The trees are native stands as much as planted ones, and the main concern for many owners is fire.

Fuel reduction around the house

In a canyon setting, the goal is to keep fire on the ground and away from the structure. Typical work includes:

  • Raising lower branches on conifers so ground fire can't climb into crowns
  • Thinning dense oak and maple clumps near the house
  • Cutting limbs away from roofs, decks and chimneys
  • Removing dead trees and standing dead stems
  • Chipping and hauling slash rather than leaving piles on the slope

Rocky Mountain Power notes that in high wildfire-risk areas it inspects lines more often, prunes for extra clearance and seeks written owner permission before removing a hazard tree. If a tree on your lot is near a line, that work is the utility's.

Access is the hard part

Narrow driveways, switchbacks and steep drop-offs mean equipment often can't get close. Many canyon jobs are done by climbing and rigging, with wood lowered or winched to the road. Some material may need to be chipped at the roadside in stages. We walk the access route with you before we price anything, and we tell you honestly if a job needs more time or a different approach.

History in the trees

The Donner Party passed through the canyon on the Hastings Cutoff in 1846, and Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley through it in 1847. Part of the canyon within This Is the Place Heritage Park became a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Since 2001, Utah Open Lands has helped preserve more than 260 acres here. Ruth's Diner, dating to 1930, is still a well-known stop for visitors.

Leaves and green waste

Emigration Canyon is served by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District, which lists Emigration Canyon among its fall leaf drop-off locations. For tree work, chipping and hauling are part of our estimate, since slash left on a canyon slope is fuel.

Emigration Canyon Questions

My driveway is steep and narrow. Can you still get a tree out?

In most cases. We climb and rig the tree in sections, then lower or winch the wood to a spot where it can be chipped. It takes more time than a valley job, and the estimate reflects the access.

How much should I thin around my canyon home?

Focus first on the area closest to the house: no limbs over the roof, nothing touching the siding or deck, and space between tree crowns. Then work outward. We'll walk the lot with you and mark what to cut.

A dead tree on my slope is leaning toward the power line. Who removes it?

Call Rocky Mountain Power at 1-888-221-7070. Trees near lines are the utility's work, and in high wildfire-risk areas it seeks owner permission before removing hazard trees. We can handle dead trees elsewhere on the property.

Can you leave the wood for my woodstove?

Yes, if you want it. We can cut trunk wood into rounds and stack it where you choose. We still recommend chipping and hauling the small branches and needles, since that fine material is what carries fire on a slope.

Is spring or fall better for canyon thinning?

Both work. Late fall and early spring avoid the hottest, driest weeks when running a saw near dry grass carries its own fire risk. Snow and road conditions in winter can limit access, so we schedule around the weather.
