A Mill Town Under the Mountains

Magna started as Pleasant Green, a farming settlement founded in 1868 at the base of the northern Oquirrh Mountains. In 1906, the Utah Copper Company began building the Magna Mill, and the town grew around it. Tree Service in Magna still reflects that history: older homes on modest lots near Main Street with trees as old as the houses, and newer subdivisions spreading toward the foothills and the Great Salt Lake flats.

Main Street and the old blocks

Magna's historic Main Street was remodeled in 2006 and has served as a filming location for several Disney productions. The Empress Theatre on Main has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985. The residential blocks around it hold many of the town's largest trees, and they are often pressed against garages, alleys and overhead service lines. Removals here are usually done in pieces, and we look for room to stage the chipper in the street or alley before quoting.

Coon Creek and the foothills

Coon Creek drains out of Coon Canyon in the Oquirrhs and flows northwest through Magna toward the Great Salt Lake. Low ground along it grows willow, cottonwood and Russian olive. Up toward Pleasant Green Cemetery, established in 1883 in the foothills, properties are drier and more exposed, and junipers and native shrubs mix with planted trees. On those lots we focus on clearing dead growth and keeping trees off roofs.

The 2020 earthquake

On March 18, 2020, at about 7:10 a.m., a magnitude 5.7 earthquake centered in Magna shook the valley, followed by more than 850 aftershocks. Damage was light overall, though several historic buildings with unreinforced brick walls were hurt. A quake does not usually knock over a healthy tree, but if you have a tree that was already leaning toward a brick chimney or an old wall, that combination is worth a look.

What we usually do here

  • Dismantle large, aging trees close to houses and garages
  • Prune cottonwoods and willows along the creek and low spots
  • Clear volunteer Siberian elm and Russian olive from fence lines
  • Grind stumps so the yard can be reseeded or graveled
  • Haul away all wood and brush

Green waste and leaves

Magna is served by the Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District, which offers a seasonal green-waste can subscription and lists a Magna site for fall leaf drop-off. Magna became a metro township in 2017 and a city on May 1, 2024.

Magna Questions

The tree by my garage is leaning more than it used to. Should I worry?

A tree that has started leaning recently is worth checking soon. Look for cracked or raised soil on the side opposite the lean. If you see that, keep people and cars away and call us.

Do you work near Main Street where there's not much room?

Yes. Many of Magna's older lots are tight. We take trees down in sections and lower them on ropes, and stage equipment in the street or alley.

Can you remove Russian olive along the creek behind my lot?

On your property, yes. We cut it, grind or treat the stumps to slow resprouting, and keep debris out of the creek. If the bank belongs to someone else, we check before working there.

Where can I drop off leaves in Magna?

The Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District lists a Magna location in its fall leaf program. Leaves must be bagged, and the district stopped supplying free bags in 2026.

Is wind off the Oquirrhs a problem for trees here?

Exposed lots on the foothill side catch more wind than sheltered blocks downtown, and dense, top-heavy crowns catch the most. Thinning so wind passes through the canopy, and removing dead or cracked limbs, lowers the chance of breakage in a storm.

Do you grind stumps on gravel or xeriscaped yards?

Yes. We move rock back from the stump where possible, grind, then rake the area so it can be re-covered. Tell us about landscape fabric or drip lines so we can work around them.
